Teresa Shows Us Exactly How Things Are Done

A recent post from Praxis student Teresa embodies so many of the fundamental principles of what Praxis Center is all about, we just had to share. In her own words:

Something rather amazing happened today. I went to see my friend’s show at a local department store today. It’s an important path for getting your work out there here in Japan from what I’ve learned so far, and I love seeing my friend and his work, and supporting what he is doing whenever I can.

I was amazed at how much his art has transformed in the past few months since his last show – he already has brilliant technique, so seeing the transformation on this other level and talking with him about it was soul nurturing. My only goal was to be a supportive friend and share some time with him. Then he started talking me up to the lady who organizes (curates?) his department store shows. He showed her the pieces from my website that are in his small gallery, and she offered to give me a show right then and there.

My work is totally different from my friend’s and I couldn’t have been more stunned! I have a year to get ready and lots to do! and I’m a complete newbie with so few pieces completed I would have totally discounted myself. Please remind me of the things I need to do beyond the art to make the most of this opportunity. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

This post hits on many of the core values that are integral to a successful art career. Teresa talks about learning how to move forward in an art world that is unfamiliar to her in a country far away from her own. She shows support for friends in the art world and celebrates their success as though it were her own. And her words demonstrate how opportunity can present itself at any moment if we are open to it. Finally, Teresa displays a willingness to reach out for guidance as an artist just getting started. She is aware that there is a finite timetable for preparation and while a year may seem like a long time, it will fly by before she knows it and there is much to be done in this time.

This is exactly why Praxis Center exists, to support artists like Teresa who are navigating the art world and are open to learning more in order to advance their careers. We are more than just a small group of teachers, though. We are a community of peers always willing to support each other. Your enrollment for just $40/month ensures that you never have to go this alone. Join our community today.
