Opportunity. It is the lifeblood of the art career. But in order to achieve results, you have to put yourself – and your work out there. This can feel intimidating, and there will be times – perhaps many of them – when you do not succeed in landing the goal you seek. But that is no reason not to try and try again. Like many things, while finding the right opportunity is about matching with those suited to you and your work, it is also merely a numbers game. There is no question that the more applications and submissions you make, the likelier you are to land your next artistic opportunity. Read on for a few to get you started.

MacDowell selects around 300 artists across multiple disciplines each year to receive fellowships each year. There are no residency fees and travel grants are available on a needs basis. Applications are open for residency at Eskenazi School of Art Architecture and Design at Indiana University Bloomington. Residency lasts from four to six weeks and selected applicants will be included in the McKinney Visiting Artist Lecture Series. For more information and to apply, visit the website. NXTHVN, located in New Haven, Connecticut, is currently accepting applications for up to seven artists and 10 curators to participate in their intensive 10-month paid fellowship program. Fellows relocate to New Haven where they participate in a mentorship-driven curriculum culminating in a group show at a prominent gallery space.
