How Much do you Understand?

It is impossible to understand what we do not experience. The world is vast and full of cultures so completely different from our own that we cannot ever presume to grasp even the broad strokes. Part of being an artist is learning the many ways in which the world and its inhabitants work. Residencies offer glimpses into places, and often cultures, that are profoundly different to those we dwell in on a daily basis.

Special note – there is one flash opportunity in this week’s blog which means the deadline is imminent.

Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts invites artists to apply for the Princeton Arts Fellowship or the Hodder Fellowship. The criteria for each is different so it is important you visit the site for full details. This is a flash opportunity with a deadline in just six days on September 17 for both.

La Wayaka Current has two opportunities to offer:

TROPIC 08°N offers artists the opportunity to develop work alongside an autonomous indigenous, matriarchal society situated between Central and South America. Artists will be immersed in and collaborate with the local community. The program runs for three or six weeks. For complete information, visit the website. Deadlines for applications are September 20 and October 20.

DESERT 23°S takes artists into one of the driest places on earth, again to work alongside an indigenous community inside a natural reserve. At present there are three week long opportunities available at various times. For full details, visit the website. Deadlines are September 20 and October 20.
