So, You’ve Decided On Art. Now What???

Deciding to launch a career in art is often simultaneously exhilarating and terrifying. On one hand, you’ve made the choice to pursue something you’re passionate about and see how far it can take you. On the other, there’s the uncertainty of success in this endeavor, the opacity of the art world, and perhaps the discouragement of those around you. Forge ahead anyway. Take it in steps. No one says you need to throw it away and restart your life entirely. This can be done alongside many things, and as you progress, it may become possible to begin shifting your focus. The bottom line? Don’t be deterred.

apexart’s Open Calls invite artists, curators, and professionals to propose exhibitions for apexart’s global community. Winning proposals receive funding and support, becoming part of apexart’s exhibition season. Submissions for 500-word proposals are open to all, without fees. Biannual calls occur in February (global) and October (NYC). Entries accepted online during specified periods. For more information and to apply, visit the website. Deadline for the current application cycle is March 1.

The Keyholder Residency Program offers emerging artists free 24-hour access to printmaking facilities, aiding their artistic journeys. Held in a shared Artists’ Studio, it includes solvent/etching areas and a darkroom. Keyholders work independently alongside peers, irrespective of discipline. Applications are reviewed by a panel, with 8 artists awarded annually. NYC-based artists without studio access are encouraged to apply. Visit the website for more information. Deadline is March 1.

The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts grants up to 70 residencies annually to artists of various disciplines worldwide, lasting 2 to 8 weeks. Residents receive a $175 weekly stipend, free housing, and a private studio. Artists include visual artists, writers, composers, and interdisciplinary creators from diverse backgrounds. For more information and to apply, visit the website. Deadline for the current application cycle is March 18.
