It is a true phenomenon that success begets success. Often, once you begin seeing your work in the light of day and a little publicity comes your way, you may find that you are suddenly just a little more sought after than you were before. This doesn’t mean that you can relax, sit back, and let the offers wash over you. Far from it. There is still much work to be done. And there will still be mixed responses to your work. But reaching a turning point is certainly something to be celebrated and enjoyed.
But how do you get there in the first place? How do you go from unknown artist, languishing in the studio day after day wondering how it is that other artists get invited to prestigious venue and win grants to being one of those artists?
Well, sometimes you need a swift kick in the…let’s let Praxis student Hope tell it in her own words:
“A great thing happened yesterday! And it all came about because of the ‘kick up the bottom’ I got from #BrainardCarey in the Patrons and Sponsors class before enrolling in this one.
I was offered (and accepted) a one person show at a lovely little regional arts centre here in rural SouthWest Scotland, opening 1st of August and up for two months. And then, while talking to the Creative Director about my work, he suddenly asked me if I’d be willing to teach a series of painting courses there over the summer, and perhaps beyond.
Uhhh….Yes!!!”
