How Do You Confront Nature?

“Like death, taxes, and marital spats, fungi are an inevitable part of human life.”

-William Davis, Super Gut: A Four Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight

No matter how hard we try to tame the natural world by doing things like mowing lawns into submission, sealing houses against the elements, and pretending we’re somehow separate from the messy business of life, nature always ends up reminding us who’s in charge. Its persistence is a reminder that humans don’t stand apart from nature, we live squarely within it. We may dream of control, but every mushroom pushing through a sidewalk crack announces we are less the rulers of the natural world than reluctant roommates sharing the lease.

Nick Fusaro joined us recently to discuss Foreman, his spring 2026 show at Blade Study. The title nods to the process itself, and the artist’s role as something of an overseer of the work created. The central work, also titled Foreman, depicts a jester who is meant to be overseeing the site. To learn more, listen to the complete interview.

Daniel A Walser joined us in 2015. At the time, he was a professor of architecture in Chur, Switzerland, specializing in architectural history, theory, and urban planning. His research and criticism focused on the relationship between architecture, art, and place in Alpine regions, earning him recognition as an influential educator and scholar.
